Throughout a large portion of the fifth and final season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max are imprisoned in a realm of memories built from the memories of Henry Creel. Their quest for an escape route in the pivotal sixth episode has them experience a traumatic incident from Henry's childhood—a moment that could contain the secret to his downfall permanently.

A Journey Into the Cavern

When she finds Max in the world called Camazotz, Holly discovers she is taking refuge in a cave that Henry is terrified of. A clever observation a spyglass taken from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the source of fear lies outside of the cave. When she lines up her view with the shape, she and Max plummet into a deep mine shaft.

There, they witness a young, eight-year-old Henry come across an man who is hurt and scared. When Henry tries to help, the man fires a gun, hitting him in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly wonders aloud. It was a factor, but the act went deeper than a fight for life.

Similar to other plot points this season, the truth about the mine shaft incident was first explored the theatrical production the prequel play.

A Naval Mystery and Secret Science

This backstory explains the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which allegedly sent a U.S. Navy ship into a plane later called the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who returned in a unresponsive state with an altered blood type.

The captain's son, a young Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this dimensional breach in remote Nevada. However, a treacherous employee took experimental components to sell to the Russian agents, who were eager to begin their parallel research. This spy in the cavern was that very thief.

The Briefcase's Contents

Based on what is known about the doctor's experiments, the briefcase most likely held some of the unique blood type. As shown, Henry is already bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon handling the contents, which triggered the development of his psychic abilities—traits he would genetically impart to the children in Hawkins Lab.

Alternatively, the case could have held dark matter that was destined to travel to Hawkins Laboratory, where it helps stabilize the mirror dimension. The stage play explains that Henry was transported in the Abyss, returning hours later fundamentally changed. As a youth, he struggles with the whispers of a malevolent force, similar to how Will Byers was influenced by the entity in season 2.

Confronting Terror

His lasting fear of that cave highlights how deeply scarring the encounter was for him. While he commands the army of monsters and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy still exists. Fear is his tool, and the narrative points to a climactic battle between the monster and Will, who has overcome his personal demons to fortify himself.

This journey has effectively disarmed Vecna. Furthermore, Will now understands what his enemy truly fears, and this may grant a key upper hand in the ultimate battle ahead.
