The ice cream brand's Founding Partner Alleges Parent Company Halted Pro-Palestinian Ice Cream Product
One of the co-founders of the famous ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has stated how parent company the multinational conglomerate stopped the introduction for an innovative pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
Ben Cohen, who established the company with his partner, announced that he plans to personally create the controversial product as part of an individual series showcasing issues the company was prevented from speaking out about.
Ongoing Conflict Between Creators versus Corporate Owner
This latest announcement escalates the ongoing conflict between the world-famous dessert company with its corporate parent, the UK-based consumer goods giant that acquired the ice cream brand since 2000.
The co-founders maintain how the parent company and their ice cream division Magnum unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's against "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
The Fruit Flavor as an Emblem for Support
The entrepreneur revealed via an Instagram video that he is creating an innovative watermelon-based frozen dessert, asking for consumer ideas regarding naming options plus potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen commented from his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-based frozen dessert that calls for lasting ceasefire in Palestine and calls for addressing the harm that was done there.”
This particular fruit has become a symbol for solidarity with Palestinians due to its colors, that mirror the colors in Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Activism and Recent Changes
In 2021, the ice cream company refused to sell their merchandise in areas under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever selling the Israeli operation to a local licensee, thereby permitting continued sales within disputed territories.
The new product line is being developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist dessert company which originally created several years back for endorsing ex- US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Back".
Management Shifts plus Future Intentions
Mr. Cohen stated how he will create additional ice cream flavors that address issues that the company was silenced from speaking about openly due to Unilever.
This development follows co-founder Jerry Greenfield resigned from the company in September, after decades with the organization, mentioning worries that the company's autonomy was compromised following Unilever's decision to restrict its social activism.
Previously, Mr. Cohen commented that "Jerry has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was breaking it."
“My conscience compels me to keep working within the organization to fight for its independence ensuring that the company can actualise the social mission, the values that it was founded on and has maintained for decades," he told media outlets.
