Shoaib Bashir Makes Surprise Selection in England's Ashes Squad
England have opted for a twelve-player selection just two days before the first Ashes Test, with Shoaib Bashir securing a unexpected spot.
Bashir's inclusion suggests that the visiting team will delay until the morning of the initial match to determine whether Perth Stadium pitch favor a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spinner.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are included in the 12-man squad, indicating there are no concerns about their pace bowler’s fitness.
The other seamers complete the attack, with the latter expected to miss out if Bashir makes the final team.
Ground Conditions Lean Toward Seamers
Brendon McCullum had been expected to opt for an all-seam attack on a ground that has hosted several previous Tests.
In those games, the majority of dismissals have been taken by pace bowling, with only a small number to spin bowling.
Among these spin dismissals, the veteran spinner has claimed the bulk, while all visiting spinners combined have just a handful.
At a venue known for its speed and carry, and whose groundsman, Isaac McDonald, stated that these characteristics are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a team relying on fast bowlers remains the probable decision.
Alternative Choices Considered
There had been rumors that the all-rounder could be parachuted into the side to offer some slow bowling while additionally bolstering the lower order.
But McCullum has opted to stick with Bashir, having said earlier this year that he would be his preferred slow bowler for the Ashes.
In July, Lyon described Bashir as “decent,” adding that “from my perspective, Jack Leach is still England’s top slow bowler.”
“It is a huge responsibility, and it can be a massive challenge for people who lack experience in the past in these conditions,” he remarked of spin bowling in Australian Tests.
“I won't let my secrets out so opponents come out and excel out here.”
