Heat and Trail Blazers Earn First Wins Following Recent Arrests
Miami scored 86 opening half scores against the Grizzlies
The Heat claimed a decisive 146-114 victory over the Grizzlies in their first basketball match since player Rozier was arrested over alleged illegal gambling.
Portland Trail Blazers head coach Billups was also arrested in connection with a broad federal probe into sports betting. Both men deny the claims.
But, the Miami team were focused as they recorded eighty-six opening half points to be ahead of Memphis by 39 after two quarters, the largest half-time advantage in the team's 37 year existence.
Adebayo led the way with twenty-four points and later stated Terry had the team's full backing.
"We stand behind him. Complete backing," Adebayo stated. "We are with him all the way. He's like family ultimately."
Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra added: "Rozier is somebody who is very dear to everyone. He's had a real positive impact on our team.
"We send our thoughts and our care for him as he faces this."
Portland also secured their first game since the detentions, with Brazilian Splitter stepping in as interim coach in Chauncey's absence and leading the squad to a convincing 139-119 win over the Golden State Warriors.
"We all had great experiences with Billups and his coaching style," Splitter said. "Our thoughts are with him and his loved ones but our focus is on the game."
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver 'Disturbed' over Arrests
Speaking about the arrests for the first time, NBA commissioner Adam Silver said he was "deeply disturbed" by the incidents of the recent days.
"Nothing is more critical to the league and its fans than the integrity of the competition," he told a broadcaster. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was very upsetting."
Silver further said an league probe into the player's conduct in spring 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a match he participated for the Charlotte Hornets versus the Pelicans, found nothing untoward.
"It was brought to our attention by the regulators and the betting companies," he continued.
"We then looked into that situation and were open about it. And while there was that aberrational betting, we, frankly, couldn't find anything.
"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can take various actions that the NBA is unable to.
"So, we've been cooperating since then. Naturally, what they announced recently was an charge.
"And 30 months after, he still hasn't been convicted of anything, in justice to Terry.
"Obviously, it doesn't look good, but he's been suspended, and so it is a balance here between protecting people's rights and investigating."
