Harvard ex-president Summers Steps Down from ChatGPT Maker's Leadership

Board Resignation
The economist announced he would step back from public duties after legislative body disclosed his regular communications with Jeffrey Epstein

One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is exiting the directorate at the artificial intelligence firm, just several days after a batch of electronic messages between him and late convicted sex offender the disgraced billionaire became widely known.

He commented in an announcement that he was "grateful for the opportunity to have contributed, enthusiastic about the promise of the enterprise, and eagerly await observing their advancement".

The prominent academic, who once presided over the Ivy League institution, declared on Monday that he would be scaling back from public commitments due to his relationship with Epstein.

Digital Correspondence

The recently released messages revealed that the economist communicated with Epstein until the 24 hours preceding Epstein's 2019 detention for alleged trafficking of underage individuals.

In additional comments, the technology organization stated it respected the economist's determination to depart.

"We appreciate his numerous inputs and the insight he brought to the Board," the company remarked.

Congressional Action

This announcement follows after the two houses of the legislative branch agreed on recently to approve a bill that would require the federal prosecutors to make public its records on Epstein.

The bill will then move to the office of the White House for endorsement. The President has said he intends to approve the measure, after reversing his position on the matter following pressure from his followers.

Correspondence Findings

A collection of Epstein-related messages made public by the legislative panel recently referenced multiple prominent individuals in the Epstein's past associates, without suggesting any legal wrongdoing by those individuals.

The communications indicated that the economist and Epstein often met for meals, with the billionaire often seeking to connect the official to influential international personalities.

Individual Statement

After the messages were shared with the general audience, Summers stated he assumed "full responsibility for my ill-advised choice to persist in communicating with Jeffrey Epstein".

He further stated that he wanted "to reestablish trust and repair bonds with the people nearest to me".

Professional History

The economist occupied high-level positions under two Democratic presidents; functioning as treasury secretary under President Clinton, and as head of the White House economic team under the former leader.

He headed Harvard from five years and continues to be a faculty member there. When stating his withdrawal from public roles previously on Monday, he indicated he would continue his academic responsibilities.

Other Impacts

Following Summers' statement on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a progressive research organization in Washington where Summers was a researcher, announced that he was ceased to be connected with the organization.

Summers joined the board of the AI company, which creates the AI chatbot, in last year - following a unsuccessful effort to oust its CEO OpenAI's head.
