Three members of law enforcement lost their lives and no fewer than 15 additional individuals sustained injuries in a seemingly deliberate blast caused by gas at a farmhouse in northern Italy.

Event Timeline

The explosion took place as law enforcement and fire personnel approached the residence in the vicinity of the Verona region to carry out an removal notice for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.

Each of the three victims who died served in the Carabinieri force.

Investigation Developments

Two individuals were arrested at the site and another man who ran away following the blast was found shortly later. Each of them have been admitted to medical facility.

The explosion could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and images from the area displayed the property reduced to a heap of debris.

“We are in a period of mourning,” said Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who noted that attempts had been made to displace the three family members in the past.

Background and Motive

The leader of the Veneto area, Luca Zaia, stated the property was under an court order due to financial obligations incurred by the three owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been assigned to speak to the siblings who had secured themselves into the house. When the officers arrived soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities think one of the residents set off the blast.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” local police chief Claudio Papagno informed the media.

A propane tank had been set off, and the detonation precisely impacted our personnel,” he added.

Molotov cocktails were also found at the residence, the Interior Minister stated.

Impact Assessment

Injured individuals by the explosion consisted of eleven more officers of the military police as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a firefighter.

Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the property was in a derelict state and had was without power.

He was convinced the explosion had taken place on a level above the doorway and informed journalists it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Moments before the blast, he said members had “detected a whistling noise, probably the gas cylinders being turned on”.

Local Response

“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors stated to Italian media, noting that the trio had previously threatened to “detonate the property” rather than be evicted.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

Defence Minister Minister Crosetto united with other political leaders in commemorating the three officers who had been killed in the service of their country.
