Eric Adams Plans to Back Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayoral Race

NYC's current mayor Mayor Adams revealed his intention to support former Governor Cuomo in the upcoming election for mayor, even after months of strained relations between the two Democratic figures.

An Unexpected Turnaround After Previous Accusations

Only weeks ago, Adams had strongly criticized Cuomo, labeling him a “snake and a untruthful person” and accusing him of having “a career of marginalizing Black political contenders.” Yet, in a recent statement, Adams reversed course, announcing he now intends to campaign alongside the former governor in areas where he holds strong support.

“It is crucial to really wake up the communities of color that have suffered from urban displacement on how important this election is,” the mayor commented.

The mayor further explained, “Residents have seen their housing costs rise due to neighborhood changes and they have been ignored in those neighborhoods, and I’m going to go to those communities and talk directly with community leaders and groups and I will appear with the former governor in those neighborhoods and get them involved.”

Election Landscape and Current Developments

The election battle has so far been shaped by the competition between the former governor and democratic socialist his main rival, whose growing support has attracted attention worldwide and represented hopes for a revitalized leftwing of the Democrats.

In a recent candidate forum, both Mamdani and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa stated they would refuse Adams’s endorsement if offered.

Earlier this year, Adams had begun his re-election campaign as an unaffiliated candidate after being indicted on federal corruption charges which were later thrown out in return for his assistance with government enforcement actions across the city.

During a separate media briefing on Thursday, Adams answered reporters inquiring into the support announcement by saying, “Andrew and I will appear together this evening.”

The announcement followed a day after the two politicians were seen sitting courtside together at the the NBA team's season opener at Madison Square Garden, which took place immediately following a contentious candidate debate.
