Biden Bowl, Anyone? Italy's PM to Auction Off World Leaders' Gifts for Good Cause

Passing on undesired offerings could be viewed as a little discourteous – unless it's done the right way.

A Philanthropic Clear-Out

The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, is set to sell around 270 presents received by her by international figures while abroad. This unusual assortment is said to contain gifts including a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gold heels.

The presents, collectively, have an approximate value of €800,000. They are scheduled to be put up for sale via competitive bidding by a Italian fine art auction house. An exact timeline is yet to be set, but the aim is to hold the auction by year's end, with the proceeds going to non-profit organizations.

Palazzo Chigi Holdings

These gifts are said to be kept in a storage room on the third floor of the prime minister's official office. It has been reported that Meloni is also intending to auction off gifts given to her political forerunners that have been sitting unused over a long period.

A complete inventory has not yet been made public, but some insight were revealed earlier this year when a comprehensive document of all declared gifts was submitted to lawmakers. The query centered on if a rule restricting expensive presents was being respected. Legally, a prime minister must declare presents worth more than €300.

An International Assortment of Gifts

Among the items:

  • A scarf from the leader of Albania, reportedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A sari from Kerala from the Indian leader.
  • A box of jewellery from the Slovakian president.
  • A porcelain tea set and a selection of wines from the Hungarian prime minister.
  • A pottery dish from the ex-American leader.
  • A electronic pad from the Ukrainian president.
  • Watercolour paintings from Moldova.
  • Additional objects including makeup, a board, and several rugs from trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Perhaps the strangest gifts included the statuette from Milei and the blue python skin shoes," reports suggest.

Political Backdrop

The prime minister has received praise, particularly from her own political sphere, with winning over international counterparts and re-establishing Italy as a prominent force on the international platform once again.

This charitable initiative represents a distinct method to manage the state presents that accumulate during a political career.
